In its latest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcweb.com\/market-studies\/pages\/distributed-control-systems.aspx\">market analysis of the distributed control system<\/a> (DCS), ARC Advisory Group details the qualitative trends impacting the evolution of the DCS, including the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), convergence of information and operational technologies (IT\/OT), and a move to more open and interoperable process automation platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cARC has been following the DCS market closely for 30 years, and we believe the technology and the market are both on the verge of significant disruptions,\u201d said Larry O\u2019Brien, vice president of research for ARC and principal author of the study. \u201cThis is due to a combination of the intense cost pressures that owner-operators now face in major end user industries and the rapid convergence of IT and OT.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the DCS market is in the midst of a major downswing, brought on in large part by low oil prices, the technology is finally moving in a direction that users have long requested, seeking open, interoperable and long-lived systems, according to Paul Miller, ARC\u2019s senior editor and content director. Commercial IT technologies have been making their way into the DCS world for the past few decades\u2014Ethernet-based control networks, UNIX- and Windows-based graphical user interfaces, and an OPC standard interface, to name a few. \u201cHowever, while promising,\u201d Miller wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/automation2.com\/2016\/09\/08\/some-random-takeaways-from-arcs-latest-and-greatest-dcs-study\/\">blog about the report<\/a>, \u201cmost major DCSs still retained enough proprietary components to limit multi-vendor interoperability and effectively \u2018lock\u2019 end users into the individual DCS suppliers\u2019 offerings and associated solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ExxonMobil\u2019s downstream business has made a considerable push for more open DCS architectures, notably awarding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.automationworld.com\/exxonmobil-makes-another-push-overhaul-process-automation\">contract to Lockheed Martin<\/a> earlier this year to serve as system integrator in the early-stage development of a next-generation open and secure automation system for process industries. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.automationworld.com\/oil-and-gas\/suppliers-react-exxonmobils-request-think-differently\">ExxonMobil detailed that relationship<\/a> at the ARC Industry Forum in February.<\/p>\n<p>This, plus a parallel initiative from major end users such as Saudi Aramco \u201care focusing on making the future DCSs they will install in literally hundreds and hundreds of their plants around the world far more open, interoperable, and long lived,\u201d Miller commented. \u201cClearly, this has significant ramifications for automation suppliers and end users alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"inserted-pullquote col-xs-12 col-md-5 awbs-plug-pullquote leftpull\">\n<div class=\"pullquote blogquote\">\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-pull-quote field-type-text field-label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field-items\">\n<div class=\"field-item even\">\u201cARC has been following the DCS market closely for 30 years, and we believe the technology and the market are both on the verge of significant disruptions.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<section id=\"block-block-77\" class=\"block block-block clearfix\"><\/section>\n<p>Miller, who edited O\u2019Brien\u2019s report, also gave a nod to the impacts of IIoT, referencing \u201ccloud computing and virtualization, plus smart devices, Big Data and advanced analytics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This ARC market research explores current and historical market performance and related technology and business trends, identifies leading suppliers, and provides five-year global forecasts for the DCS market.
