{"id":1298,"date":"2018-09-24T21:43:49","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T14:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/simenteknindo.com\/news\/?p=1298"},"modified":"2018-09-25T10:00:18","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T03:00:18","slug":"shell-scales-artificial-intelligence-across-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simenteknindo.com\/news\/shell-scales-artificial-intelligence-across-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Shell Scales Artificial Intelligence Across Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Accelerating its digital transformation globally, Shell is deploying a platform from C3 IoT to replicate AI and machine learning applications across its upstream and downstream operations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a special session on digitalization at the Offshore Technology\n Conference (OTC) earlier this year, it was clear just how much\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shell<\/a>\u2019s\n oil and gas operations were embracing a variety of digital technologies\n to move the business forward. Although Martijn Dekker, vice president \nof strategy and portfolio for Shell, emphasized the need to start with a\n business problem in mind rather than letting the technology push you, \nhe also urged others in the oil and gas business to grab the value from \nthe data they already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re using the technology that\u2019s already there to create value \ntoday. We\u2019re essentially using the data we already have and creating \nbetter efficiencies,\u201d Dekker said. He stressed the importance of just \njumping into the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) and \nshowing the value. \u201cWe should just start doing it. That\u2019s the way we\u2019re \napproaching it in Shell. It\u2019s infectious. After three months, they \nalready see the benefit and value, and the cash coming back to the \nbusiness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As its latest testament to the economic value that Shell expects to \nrealize from AI and machine learning, the oil major has selected an AI \nplatform from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/c3iot.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C3 IoT<\/a>\u00a0to \nenable and accelerate digital transformation on a global scale. By \ndeploying the C3 IoT Platform globally on Microsoft Azure, Shell is \nlooking to rapidly scale and replicate AI and machine learning \napplications across its upstream and downstream businesses. Shell aims \nto use the technologies to improve operating performance, with an \nemphasis on health, safety, security, environment and asset performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shell will deploy the C3 IoT Platform on Azure for a broad set of AI \napplications, starting with predictive maintenance for hundreds of \nthousands of critical pieces of equipment globally, and aim to expand to\n support other uses cases throughout its operations with machine \nlearning, machine vision and natural language processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C3 IoT Platform enables Shell\u2019s developers and data scientists to\n integrate and process Shell\u2019s data into a unified data image kept \ncurrent in real time. They will be able to rapidly develop, deploy and \noperate advanced AI and Internet of Things (IoT) applications across \nmillions of Shell assets, its supply chain and markets globally. \nExamples of AI capabilities that Dekker mentioned at OTC ranged from \ninventory optimization to better use of seismic data to find more oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the C3 IoT Platform, we\u2019re looking forward to significantly \nenhancing the productivity and scope of our advanced analytics \ncapabilities to create greater economic value across Shell\u2019s \noperations,\u201d said Jay Crotts, Shell group CIO. \u201cC3 IoT allows us to \noptimize our existing investments in data and cloud infrastructure while\n accelerating time to value of AI-based applications, so Shell can \nbetter serve our customers with even more agility and efficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Shell agreement builds on the C3 IoT and Microsoft partnership to\n accelerate enterprise AI and IoT application development. With C3 IoT \non Azure, Shell will perform advanced work on tier-one transactional \ndata in the Azure cloud, including predictive maintenance, maintenance \noptimization, telematics, production optimization, and in the future \nmachine vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShell\u2019s AI- and IoT-enabled enterprise transformation will create \nsignificant customer and economic impact,\u201d said Judson Althoff, \nexecutive vice president of Microsoft\u2019s Worldwide Commercial Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest move from Shell reflects a growing market momentum toward \nplatform adoption for accelerated digital transformation, according to \nThomas M.
